HanmiGlobal to monitor building houses for Neom workers

By Park Jae-hyuk pjh@koreatimes.co.kr

HanmiGlobal said Tuesday it won an order to monitor the building of an additional 10,000 houses for Saudi Arabia’s Neom construction workers by May 2024.

The latest contract was signed after the Korean project management firm won an order last November to monitor the building of 50,000 houses in the construction worker villages and an additional order in March to monitor the construction of 20,000 houses in the villages.

As a result, HanmiGlobal will manage the building of a combined 80,000 houses for Neom construction workers.

Led by Saudi Arabia’s Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, Neom is a $500 billion project aimed at developing an eco-friendly smart city spread across 26,500 square kilometers in the Middle Eastern country’s northwestern Tabuk Province, which is located near the Red Sea. The project, therefore, needs a large number of construction workers.

According to HanmiGlobal, the construction worker villages will accommodate 489,500 houses on 26.4 square kilometers of land. In addition, the villages will accommodate restaurants, hospitals and facilities for sports, entertainment and religious activities.

The company expects to win additional orders to monitor construction works in the villages.

Including the latest contract, HanmiGlobal won a total of eight orders related to the Neom project. Since its entry into the Saudi Arabian market in 2008, the Korean firm has participated in over 30 projects there, including the development of Al Wedyan smart city project.
