LG CNS offers AI-powered English education service

By Baek Byung-yeul baekby@koreatimes.co.kr

LG CNS is expanding the scope of its English language learning service — based on artificial intelligence (AI) technology — by distributing them to schools across the country for free to let more people learn English easily using the latest technology, the company said Thursday.

LG CNS is a subsidiary of LG Corporation founded in 1987 that provides information technology services.

The company explained that the language learning service, called Speaking Class, is a smartphone application-based service that lets users study English anywhere and anytime through their handsets. It said the service is designed to maximize learning efficiency by using AI, because the technology analyzes users’ English pronunciation, speech speed and similarity of answers to measure their learning level on a scale of one to five.

Users can also train to improve the accuracy of their English speaking by comparing model answers with their answers.

The other strength of the Speaking Class service is that teachers can create their own English learning content, LG CNS said.

“Most of the current English education apps are designed to learn only through given content. But we support the Speaking Class production tool and website for teachers. When a teacher enters an English conversation, our AI technology automatically processes it into English learning content and reflects the results in the Speaking Class app,” a company spokesman said.

LG CNS said the Speaking Class app has 71 kinds of English textbooks for elementary, middle and high schools here. To this end, the company signed content partnership agreements with seven publishers.

The company added that it provides the service in 11 education offices in the country at no cost. Since June 2021, it has already provided the service to the office of education in Seoul, Busan and Jeju Island.

To let more people experience its AI-based language learning services, the company took part in EdTech Korea 2022 fair, which is currently being held at COEX convention center in Seoul until Saturday. There, the company also displayed another AI-based English language learning app AI Tutor.
